Focus over Scale

There’s an interesting article in this months Strategy & Business magazine that stresses the benefits of focussing on a niche rather than trying to achieve scale in online business. An example used is Amazon.com and though this seems counterintuitive Amazon’s early days were about focussing on a niche market – Books and executing that business domain well. Once they had acheived that base they could start to expand.

Back in 2007 I launched EdinburghFestivalJobs.com – a very niche job listings board. But I could see an opportunity to create value for both advertisers and job seekers that wasn’t being met. This site has gone on to become popular with both audiences.

Again – focussing on a niche I’ve launched EdinburghFestivalRooms.com. Similarly I hope to offer value to both guests and hosts by specialising on serving those visiting Edinburgh and those renting rooms out in Edinburgh. The service offers value that is currently uniquely available to Edinburgh Festival rooms.

As a landlord you can

  • Take bookings online
  • Manage availability in real time
  • Set peak and off peak prices

To advertise a room you can register here

As a guest you can reserve a room online and see exactly when it is available.

Edinburgh Festival Rooms is a new venture, in time it’s hoped that the same success seen by EdinburghFestivalJobs.com can be captured for EdinburghFestivalRooms.com but this will only be possible if we try to deliver real value on the market we are working in and this requires a real focus on the needs of that niche.
